United were defeated 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium by City on Sunday in what was an easy win for manager Pep Guardiola despite his mixed start to the season. For City’s first goal, Jeremy Doku skipped past Luke Shaw with ease before setting up Phil Foden. Erling Haaland then added two more later on in what was a poor defensive display.
Keane wasn’t happy with the United players after the match and questioned their commitment. The former midfielder picked out Shaw as one of the worst performers, despite having vast experience in the Premier League.
“But United’s defending… the two midfielders are too square and Shaw just gives up. It’s a nice bit of skill but Shaw’s an England international player, he’s got hundreds of games under his belt and doesn’t even get his body position right.
“I think he has been getting away with murder for years at United. Always injured and never quite fit.
“We make excuses and then he gets a few games under his belt and he’s making decisions like he doesn’t even want to tackle anyone.”
The England international was one of the worst performers on the pitch for United, but to single him out when the defence as a whole was poor could be seen as quite harsh. Since Amorim was appointed in November last year, United have amassed the least points of any ever-present Premier League side and United’s performances are more down to tactics than individual displays.
