Between January and August 2024, Barton published 48 posts about Aluko on his X account which included posts comparing her to serial killer Rosemary West.

Barton was not at the court hearing but the High Court heard on Tuesday that the case had been stayed and the former Manchester City star must pay Aluko over £300K in damages.

Gervase de Wilde, representing Ms Aluko described it as "a deliberately targeted public campaign of vilification.”

He also said "Mr Barton's campaign caused Ms Aluko enormous distress. When she sought to defend herself against Mr Barton's conduct, and that of his followers, he criticised and attacked her for doing so."

Mr de Wilde claimed that the X posts wrongly claimed Aluko 'cynically sought to exploit her status as an alleged victim of racism and bullying'.

Barton has been told to pay £339,000, with the first £100,000 plus interest due by March 24th.

Aluko attended the London court on Tuesday and told PA after the hearing: “I’m glad it’s the end.”

Barton, who has previously managed Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers, made just one appearance for England during his playing career in 2007 and has found himself in multiple scandals after retirement.
