Former Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy made his debut for Cremonese against Hellas Verona as he failed to score.

The 38-year-old joined the newly promoted side earlier this month and was introduced just before the hour mark by the Italian side in what was one of the most highly anticipated debuts after the summer transfer window.

Italian media were locked on to the game as they studied Vardy who has a very big reputation after leaving the Premier League. La Provincia Cremona reported that he "commands respect and fear" as boos as well as roars erupted around the stadium when he was introduced to the game.

La Provincia Cremona also added commented on the respect and expectations surrounding the England international:

"It's a taste, not a complete performance, but it's enough to understand the curiosity and expectations swirling around him.

"Not an easy debut for Jamie Vardy in Serie A. Just over 35 minutes played, including injury time, and just seven touches, but with 100 per cent successful passes."

La Repubblica wrote: "Only in the 59th minute, Davide Nicola decided it was time to give Jamie Vardy his Italian league debut. He brought him on for a lackluster Federico Bonazzoli, but the Englishman couldn't outdo his team-mate."

Football Italia also commented: "Cremonese tried to play to Vardy's strengths, attempting to feed him with balls in behind, but Verona were well set-up and opportunities across the 90 were fairly limited for La Cremo."

After the game, former England international Vardy wrote on his X account that he is looking forward to the next game, where he can hopefully grab a goal to silence any doubters:

"A good hard-fought point away from home.

"I'm happy to have made my @USCremonese debut tonight and I'm looking forward to playing at home on Sunday."
