Ilias Chair says QPR's dressing room knows their potential, but insists no-one is getting ahead of themselves.

Currently sitting ninth on the Championship table, three points outside the playoff places, QPR appear in the best shape in some years to mount a serious promotion challenge. Further offering encouragement is the club's French manager, Julien Stephan, who is still bedding down his methods after arriving in the summer to replace Marti Cifuentes.

With so much room for improvement - and with a solid first-half of the season behind them - QPR are threatening to be one of the dark horses in the battle for promotion.

Asked about the prospect, Morocco midfielder Chair told Tribalfootball.com: "I don't think we are thinking about it like that.

"I think we just take it game by game. I know this is such a cliche answer, but this is genuinely how we feel about it.

"As you can see we've had two good games against West Brom and Birmingham and then against Middlesborough we lost. So in this league there's lots of ups and downs. One day you can be a challenging for promotion, the next minute you find yourself in a relegation fight. So we we're trying to keep an even keel."

Stephan impact

On how Stephan's system and tactics has helped the R's so far this season, Chair is effusive. The diminutive midfield schemer admitting the former Strasbourg and Rennes coach's approach suits his game to a tee.

He continued: "He's had a great impact. Obviously we as players will respect him and follow his instructions. He's a top coach he's been with top clubs. So we are very honored and delighted to have him here at this club and coaching us.

"Obviously he's worked with top players and we're trying to pick his brain every single time we work with him and yeah it's been great so far."

As for his own role within Stephan's system, Chair says: "Yeah, he's been great for my game. I mean, what I generally like about him is his straightforwardness in what I need to do and what he wants from me. That's something that I do appreciate.

"And he gives me a lot of responsibility. He gives me a lot of pressure, I would say, to go out there and perform every week. And I like that. I'm a player who performs well under those circumstances.

"The team has been good. We have a lot of young players, who are very good players. They've got a lot of talent and a lot of potential. We have players who obviously are trying to learn about the league and we're just trying to help them.

"For me, I've been here for almost 10 years now so I try to help everyone and make sure that that I can be there for everyone to help the team and club progress forward because that's what they deserve.

"Everyone at this club works so hard every day, day in and day out to take it where this club belongs. And hopefully one day we can achieve that all together."

Paying back

Indeed, Chair admits helping QPR return to England's top-flight would be an ambition fulfilled. Now a World Cup veteran, Chair achieved that international recognition thanks to QPR.

Asked what the club means to him, Chair was very clear.

He said, "Honestly, QPR means everything to me. They've given me my chance when no one would. And all I want to do is repay them. The fans have been supporting me through this whole period. We've had ups, we've had downs, we've had all sorts of things going on.

"And we've always stuck together. And I will always, always be grateful for this club. And my only obsession is to see this club do well and reach the Premier League. That's what we all want and we all strive.

"And I will be doing everything in my power to accomplish that mission."
