The 32-year-old defender also held talks with Saudi clubs, but it looks like he will stay with the side who acknowledge the experience and knowledge he brings to the dressing room.

United triggered the one-year extension clause in Maguire’s contract over the summer but are now seeking to tie him down to a longer deal, despite his age.

Now, an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided more information on the possible deal as talks get underway.

“Manchester United are in talks with Harry Maguire over new deal with existing contract due to expire in June.

“Face to face meeting with his camp took place in the recent days and more will follow to discuss conditions.

“MUFC happy with Maguire’s contribution + leadership.”

Despite mass spending, United clinched just their third win from seven games against a newly-promoted Sunderland at the weekend. This comes despite mass spending which hasn’t quite worked out in what could be a factor to looking inside the club for inspiration.

Maguire is one of five players who could leave United for free in 2026 in a list that also includes Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro and Tom Heaton
