Former Real Madrid goalkeeper and Liverpool coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena has sadly passed away at the age of 64.

The former Spain international, who served for three years on Merseyside under former manager Rafa Benitez before departing in 2007, died on Sunday after a long battle with illness.

Liverpool released a lengthy statement on Monday morning in what is a sad time for the side. 

“Liverpool FC is saddened by the passing of former goalkeeper coach Jose Manuel Ochotorena. 

“It was announced today that Ochotorena has died at the age of 64. 

Born in San Sebastian, Ochotorena came through the youth ranks at Real and was part of the senior squad between 1982 and 1988, winning three La Liga titles, two UEFA Cups and one Copa de la Liga. 

“The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with Jose Manuel’s family and friends at this difficult time. 

“RIP Jose Manuel Ochotorena, 1961-2025.” 

Valencia and Real Madrid also released statements after his death was announced, sending their condolences. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was helped by Ochotorena when signing for the side, sent a message on Monday morning after the devastating news was announced. 

“A person who had a huge impact on my career and my life is gone. 

“Thank you for everything you taught me, for trusting me and for helping me grow, not only as a football player but as a person. 

“Your legacy will live on forever in all of us who were lucky enough to learn from you. Rest in peace Ochoto.”
