Leeds United boss Daniel Farke says he's well aware of the rich history of the club ahead of today's FA Cup semifinal against Chelsea.

Victory would see Leeds reach a first final in 53 years.

“If you want to be the manager of Leeds United, you have to understand this club,” said Farke, now in his third season.

“It's not like you come here and you think, 'Okay, I'm bigger than the club and I tell you all how football works and how a club should work.'

“If you're not open for this massive club with this tradition, with this emotion, this passion, then you have no chance to be successful here.

“Managers are coming and going, players are coming and going, even sporting directors and board members are coming and going. No one is bigger than the club. Our mantra is side before self and this is what you have to understand.

“You have to value how this club is and don't change the DNA, don't change what makes this club successful. Don't change that one of the biggest essences of this club is our supporters.

“You have to unite this club and not just do what you think should be done, you have to adapt. It's not like the club adapts to you.

“That doesn't mean you have to be like a flag in the wind.

“Especially in this club you have to be in a positive way pretty stubborn in the values you want to have, the principles you want to play so that you're not driven too much by your emotions.

“You need to be strong in your beliefs and you need to sometimes be like a shield for your players, for your staff members, for your supporters.

“But it's also important to understand the DNA of Leeds United otherwise you can't be successful for this club – not as a manager, not as a player, not as support staff, not as an owner.

“We are fully aware of the history.

“If you wear the Leeds United shirt, you have the responsibility to represent this club in the way our heroes have done.”
