Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has ripped into the club after their draw to Sunderland this week.

The Premier League champions secured a 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Wednesday night as Florian Wirtz's deflected strike rescued his side a point in the second half.

Last season's Premier League champions have already lost more matches than they did in the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign. It is no secret that Liverpool are struggling this season, and many believe their draw against Sunderland sums up their campaign so far.

"Liverpool have been awful. Sunderland have been so much sharper," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"The performance was really, really worrying. It feels like a step back," Carragher argued. "They didn't look like scoring. They were lacking zip, energy, pace and power. It's really worrying.

"They are sleepwalking through the game, everything feels so slow," he said at the break. "Liverpool need to get organised for the second half, there's far too much space all over the pitch."

Slot tries to see the bright side

Manager Arne Slot will now face Leeds United this weekend, a side who beat Chelsea 3-1 on Wednesday night. The Dutchman is under immense pressure at the moment, and anything less than a win could mean the end for him on Merseyside.

He spoke after the game as he tried to take positives from the game despite the result.

"Far too many times this season we don't concede a lot of chances but the ones that we do go in.

"We weren't lucky enough to get the win over the line but in recent weeks we would have lost this game so that is a positive. We are already 14 games in now, and we haven't been able to score enough from open play or from set-pieces."
