Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris insists his side's late 2-1 Premier League defeat to Ipswich on Saturday (August 22) was 'a bit cruel.'

Le Bris’ side surprised many last season by beating the odd to qualify for the Europa League having only just returned to the Premier League.

Sunderland will undoubtedly be looking to build upon that in 2026-27 but suffered a late defeat to newly promoted Ipswich in their first game of the campaign.

New signing Emersonn opened the scoring for Gary O’Neil’s side before Angulo levelled things up with a lovely freekick just before half-time.

It was starting to look like the two sides would have to share the spoils, but former player Jack Clarke ended up snatching a late winner for Ipswich.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Le Bris insisted the defeat was ‘a bit cruel.’

"The result is a bit cruel because we dominated the ball but dominating possession doesn't mean you win the game,” he said.

"They were well organised and ready to exploit our turnovers. Now it is about us, we have to show more composure.

"Our goal was a nice goal, happy for him but it is still a defeat. We will try to analyse quickly this defeat to go forward."

Likely to make any new signings? "We will see. The club wants to work to help the squad to get better. Our targets are clear but I cannot comment on individuals."
