Benatia offered to quit OM this week after the departure of coach Roberto de Zerbi.
But his proposal was immediately rejected by shareholder Frank McCourt and president Pablo Longoria.
Contrary to reports in the UK, RMC says Benatia was shaken by De Zerbi's demise, believing the pair would be together for a three-year project.
Indeed, such was the impact of De Zerbi's exit that Benatia told the players he intended to follow the Italian out of the door.
He told the dressing room: "The coach is no longer here, he has assumed his responsibilities. I am also ready to do the same and leave the club, although I will stay in Marseille because I love this city and this club."
Benatia also told the players: "If the rules are too harsh, tell me and I'll leave, I'll leave you alone. Otherwise, we'll turn the page and move forward together."
Meanwhile, speaking to L'Equipe, Benatia said this morning: "When a coach leaves, it's like a family member. It always hurts. He's not the only one responsible; we'll have to find better solutions,."
