Arsenal have held talks with RC Strasbourg Alsace technical director Pascal de Maesschalck, according to The Athletic, as they search for a successor to Per Mertesacker.

The former Arsenal defender stepped down from his academy manager role at the end of the season after eight years in charge of the club’s youth development structure.

De Maesschalck is currently serving as technical director at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, one of the clubs under the BlueCo ownership group.

Prior to that, the 52-year-old Belgian worked as academy manager at AS Monaco, where he played a key role in developing talents such as Eliesse Ben Seghir, Maghnes Akliouche, and Soungoutou Magassa.

Arsenal view him as a strong candidate for the position, with initial discussions already taking place with the experienced executive.
