Now back in Portugal and with Benfica, where he began his senior coaching career, Mourinho admits he hopes there isn't tension with his former club.

He said, "If you ask me if Porto is one of the biggest clubs in the world, yes. If Porto is a giant, I say yes. I didn't come to Benfica to annoy Porto, I came to enjoy the opportunity to coach a big club, with big ambitions. I hope they don't get angry with me.

"After arriving at Benfica, I spoke with Villas-Boas and Varandas, the president of Sporting. Just because I'm the coach of Benfica doesn't mean I came to wage war.

"Do I think I'll be applauded again at the Dragao? Of course not. Porto is a huge part of my history, and I'm a huge part of Porto's history."

Mourinho also smiled: "My staff and I decided to go to various places, both in Portugal and abroad, but only to clubs that are winning. Porto last week, this week it would have been Sporting-Moreirense, then we would have gone to Madrid, but we decided not to go to Inter.

"The fans gave me a fantastic welcome, which I think I deserve, but for 90 minutes we're enemies... but sporting enemies, that's all I want. Porto wants to win, and I want to win too. Nothing else."
