After picking up a brace and an assist in the Netherlands’ 5-1 demolition of Sweden in Houston, Gakpo revealed he has been handed more “freedom” with the national side compared to Liverpool.
The Dutchman picked up just nine goals in 52 games for the Reds as they barely clung on to a Champions League spot at the end of the season under former manager Arne Slot who struggled to get the best out of Gakpo.
Now, despite his poor form for Liverpool last season, Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly keen on his services as per journalist Nicolò Schira.
“Excl. - Roberto #DeZerbi wants to sign Cody #Gakpo. #Tottenham are working and ready to submit an important bid to #Liverpool; while for the Dutch winger offered a contract until 2031 and a key-role in RDZ’s Project. Opened talks.”
Spurs have already signed former Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke in what has been a fine summer haul so far.
The North London side are also linked with Sandro Tonali, Savinho and Mateus Fernandes as De Zerbi builds a side that will challenge for Europe next season.
Whether Gakpo will be part of that project is unknown but it is likely that they will test the waters with the winger who continues to shine at the World Cup.
