With just under 50 days to go before England kick off the showpiece against Croatia in Texas, Tuchel has some big decisions to make as he ponders his squad for this summer’s World Cup.
England under-21s boss Lee Carsley recently said he expects Max Dowman to have a "fantastic future at international level" but at just 16 years old it could be a huge leap for him to make it into Tuchel’s side.
Speaking to The Standard, Cahill believes that Dowman will likely miss out due to the sheer quality England have to choose from.
“I can’t really see that. You’ve got to look at the depth and the personnel he’s (Thomas Tuchel) got to choose from — and there’s going to be a hell of a lot of players that will miss out.”
The likes of Jordan Henderson, Phil Foden, Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers will be fighting for a spot in the middle of the park, leaving Dowman far from a favourite for the side.
Jude Bellingham was notably left out of the squad back in October but even if the Real Madrid maestro misses out and injuries flood the side, Dowman is still unlikely to be invited on the plane to North America anytime soon.
Tuchel takes England to the World Cup in June with the Three Lions one of the favourites to claim the title for the first time since 1966 as a whole generation of fans hope history can be made once more.
