Manager Graham Potter is under immense pressure after a dreadful start to the season which has seen his side being defeated 5-1 at home to Chelsea, losing 3-0 to Sunderland on the opening day and being knocked out of the EFL Cup in round 2 by Wolves this week.
Fernandes would become West Ham's third-biggest signing, behind Sebastien Haller (£45m) and Lucas Paqueta (£51m) if it is sealed before the summer transfer window close in just a few days time. Southampton demanded at least £50m for Fernandes, who joined for £12m last year but it looks like The Hammers have negotiated the price down.
The deal was revealed by journalist Ben Jacobs in a simple tweet, outlining the details of the agreed fee.
“West Ham have agreed a £38m+£3m fee with Southampton for Mateus Fernandes.”
The Portugal Under-21 international has played 46 times for Saints, scoring four goals and providing seven assists. He was the club’s standout player for Southampton during the 2024/2025 season despite their relegation and there was always fear that the club had little chance of holding on to him this season.
Fernandes missed Southampton's Carabao Cup tie against Norwich City on Tuesday and indicated his desire to move on from Saints following the club's relegation from the Premier League. He will now get his move back to the top division as Potter tries to save his job with fresh talent.
