Wednesday are currently rock bottom of the Championship and were destined for relegation when following an automatic 12-point deduction for entering administration earlier this year, bringing an end to the tenure of owner Dejphon Chansiri.
Now, as reported by Sky Sports, the Championship side has been hit with a further 6 points deduction which relates to breaches of EFL regulations governing payment obligations.
In a statement, the EFL confirmed both the deduction and a penalty for the club’s former owner, saying:
“Sheffield Wednesday FC are to be deducted six points with immediate effect for multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to payment obligations, with the club’s former owner, Mr Dejphon Chansiri, prohibited from being an owner or director of any EFL club for a period of three years.
“The sanctions on both the club and Mr Chansiri can be confirmed after the parties reached an agreement on the appropriate sanction, which was subsequently ratified by the chair of the appointed independent disciplinary commission.”
Wednesday are now destined for relegation to League One, now sitting 23 points off 23rd-placed Norwich and 27 adrift of safety. The season is unsalvageable, but support off the pitch is higher than ever as the club prepares to drop down.
