The 39-year-old Celtic goalkeeper has been out of action for almost a month and will need two surgeries on his shoulder after seeing a specialist on Monday in what is devastating news.
He had previously ruled himself out of contention for Denmark’s upcoming World Cup play-offs and now he said he had been told he had “torn his bicep, rotator cuff, dislocated the shoulder and torn the labrum” on CBS Sports Golazo.
“I could’ve potentially played my last football game.”
“It’s looking like 10-12 months of rehab. It’s been a strange few days."
Peter Schmeichel is stunned
His father looked stunned and said he that he wishes that his son’s career does not end so abruptly.
“10-12 months?!”
“Kasper’s always been there. I’ve tried to do exactly the same for him.
“Whatever situation he was facing, I’ve tried to be there as a father, as a dad.
“I don’t want this to end with an injury like that.”
Viljami Sinisalo has since been between the sticks for Celtic and it is unlikely Schmeichel will feature for the Scottish side again, especially after being booed in their 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart last month.
Reports state that he is scheduled for his first surgery on Friday and will commit fully to the recovery process which could take up to a year.
