The United star was named the best player in England in a vote by members of the FWA, a group which comprises around 900 football journalists in what was a controversial decision.
With 19 assists already in the competition, Fernandes is one shy of the record set by Thierry Henry and equalled by Kevin De Bruyne in what has been an incredible campaign.
Despite such an impressive season, Arsenal fan Piers Morgan has ripped into the choice to pick Fernandes over Gunners midfielder Declan Rice who is leading his side to the title.
"Put it this way: Rice is the most important player in the side that is top of the Premier League table, has reached the finals of both the Champions League and League Cup and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Fernandes is playing for a team that, by contrast, sacked their manager in January, has not played a single game in Europe and lost at the first hurdle in both domestic cups.
"Another way of looking at it: Rice has won more competitive club matches this season (35) than Fernandes has even played (34). Rice has been on the pitch for 4,156 minutes in all competitions, often playing through pain, in pursuit of the biggest prizes. Fernandes has played 2,933 minutes, in pursuit of a top-five finish."
Morgan also called the award a “farce” and “ridiculous” in quote tweets as he ripped into the decision to overlook Rice.
With three fixtures against Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Brighton to go, Fernandes has led his side back to the Champions League. However, Rice is set to forge a path to the title as well as helping his side to the Champions League final as fans continue to stay divided.
