Former Liverpool Right-back Steve Finnan won the Champions League but now faces bankruptcy after a legal battle with his brother.

The Irishman was signed by Gerard Houllier in the summer of 2003 and went on to start in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul before being taken off at halftime when Liverpool made their famous comeback.

Despite his success, Finnan has ended up locked in a decade-long battle with sibling Sean due to a failed joint property venture, which ultimately ended in him securing a £4M High Court settlement in 2018.

However, Finnan did not get the money after his brother became bankrupt, leading him to pursue bankruptcy proceedings against Sean in July 2019.

As reported by GB News, Finnan himself faces insolvency proceedings over unpaid legal costs from one of these disputes with his brother, which totalled around a five-figure costs bill.

The Sun report that Finnan attempted to appeal the orders, but a judge has branded the bid “hopeless”.

Mr Justice Mellor said: “I form the strong view that this appeal simply amounts to an attempt on his part to delay the final hearing of this petition for as long as possible.”

Finann enjoyed a lengthy career with Fulham, Liverpool and Portsmouth, winning Champions League and FA Cup medals, as well as featuring more than 50 times for his country.

No date was set for the bankruptcy case to return to court in what is a tricky, ongoing case. Finnan has reportedly argued that his case was too "complex" for county court jurisdiction and should be elevated to a High Court judge as the case continues.
