Barcelona dumped Newcastle United out of the Champions League on Wednesday night in a 7-2 scoreline as the Magpies were torn apart in Camp Nou.
Howe’s side held their own until the second half where the game went downhill for Newcastle who now turn their focus back to the Premier League as they aim to qualify for Europe.
Speaking after the game, Howe said it’s down to his side to bounce back as he is already mentally prepared for the clash at St James' Park.
“I have no problem picking myself up, it is more the players. I am able to move quite quickly through things, through games and the review process.
“Now it is all about Sunderland. It is not about today, it is about making sure we are mentally and physically ready to go into a huge game. I think it’s a good game for us to go into.
“Sunday is huge. It’s difficult for me to talk about it now. We have just got to play like our lives depend on it. It’s such a big game for the city, for the supporters, for the players, for the whole club. We need to deal with this very quickly and look to Sunday.”
Both sides are separated by just two points in the table as both teams seek to push on from mid-table. Both sides have only met twice in recent years, with each side winning once in what should be a fierce derby and another tough test for Newcastle.
