Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has suggested that sacking Enzo Maresca was a huge mistake.

The Blues have won just four of their last 12 matches and lost six under new manager Liam Rosenior who took over from Maresca earlier this season.

Maresca guided Chelsea to Europa Conference League and Club World Cup glory last year, but the board was ruthless when the club suffered a lull in form as they fell out of the top 4.

In an interview with The Athletic, Cucurella ripped into the club who he feels has brought instability and an uncertainty about the direction of the side thanks to constant sackings.

"When a manager gives you that confidence and offers you a platform to fight for titles, you’d die for him. The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision."

"The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell.

“To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season… Look at Arsenal now, who are fighting for every trophy.

“They’ve been with (Mikel) Arteta for almost seven years, and they have not won much. But that trust in the project gives rewards."

Cucurella is 27 years old and with his contract running down, this season could be his last in West London as reports link him with Barcelona, a side less used to manager instabilities.
