Despite the win, Arbeloa’s side are 11 points behind league leaders Barcelona who they clash with at the weekend in a game where Mbappe is also set to be absent.

During his post-match press conference, Arbeloa was asked about Mbappe, who was not present at the RCDE Stadium to support his his which drew criticism from the media.

The French international travelled to the Italian island with his partner instead, a move that Arbeloa thinks is absolutely fine.

"All planning regarding injured players is always overseen by Real Madrid's medical staff, who determine when they need to go to Valdebebas and when they don't.

“In his free time, Mbappe can do whatever he sees fit, like any other player," Arbeloa told reporters.

With five defeats from six attempts against Barcelona, Madrid’s chances of victory against their arch rivals are slim, especially as Mbappe continues to stay away from the side.

Mbappe missed out against Espanyol due to a hamstring issue that reports state is not serious. There is a chance that the 27-year-old could be back on the field against Barcelona as Madrid aim to keep their title chances alive.

Mbappe has scored 41 goals and registered six assists in 41 appearances for Madrid this season, but he is set to go without a league title and Champions League title in what has been a disappointing campaign.
