Originally targeting the 2029 edition, Ethiopia adjusted its plans after CAF announced in December 2025 that AFCON would be held every four years starting in 2028.
EFF Secretary General Bahiru Tilahun confirmed to state broadcaster Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation that the formal bid has been lodged, supported by firm government guarantees, highlighting the country’s commitment to meeting CAF’s hosting requirements.
Although Ethiopia currently lacks a CAF-accredited stadium, several projects are nearing completion, including the Adey Abeba Stadium in Addis Ababa.
Other cities being considered for matches include Bahir Dar, Dire Dawa, Hawassa, Jimma, and Mekele. Ethiopia faces competition from a proposed joint bid by Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa, while Egypt has also been linked with interest.
