Newcastle have agreed to sign goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen for €20m (£17m) from Reims as competition for their number one spot.

That is according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, who claims the French shot stopper has given his "agreement in principle" to join the Magpies this summer.

Jaouen has been starring for a Reims side that finished sixth in Ligue 2 this term, with the 20-year-old conceding just 35 goals in 34 matches and recording 15 clean sheets.

Eddie Howe will be delighted to see the youngster agree terms over a move, but it certainly leaves Nick Pope's future hanging in the balance.

Pope has watched his performances decline this term, and although he recently grabbed his number one jersey back from Aaron Ramsdale, the Englishman could leave this summer.

The 34-year-old's contract at St James Park expires in June 2027, and with Leeds showing an interest in his signature, surely the Toon would be wise to cash in.

Newcastle had been linked to several other goalkeepers before agreeing to sign Jaouen - including Manchester City's James Trafford - but it remains to be seen whether they capture someone with more experience.
