Arsenal legend Martin Keown has backed Max Dowman to make a major impact under manager Mikel Arteta.

Dowman broke the record to become the youngest scorer in Premier League history last season at just 16 years and 144 days and made his first league start on the final day of last campaign under Arteta.

The teenager has enjoyed a meteoric rise under Arteta, proving that age is just a number as he works his way into the first team alongside world class talents such as Bruno Guimaraes and Declan Rice

Dowman scored in a pre-season friendly win over Girona and is a legitimate option for Arteta going forward as he rotates his side for four different competitions once more this season.

Speaking ahead the Gunners’ first clash against Coventry City on Friday night, Keown has backed Dowman to continue his impressive development and play a major role in Arsenal’s success this season.

"He's 16 years of age. It's already an incredible story. He's already ahead of schedule.

"This season might be the one. We saw those two great moments in the Everton match. That puts him down in history now. The youngest player in the Premier League to score a goal.

“How important was that? He's going to play a big part. Hopefully this is the breakthrough year, but maybe it's early. But nonetheless, I'm going to enjoy watching him when he plays."

The Gunners have failed to successfully defend a title since the 1930s and Dowman could be key to ending such a poor statistic as supporters hope the youngster can inspire the side to lift the title once again.
