Vangelis Pavlidis broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, followed by Paulo Victor's own goal in the 38th minute. In the second half, Gonçalo Paciência's goal in the 47th minute reopened the game, but Benfica held on.
With this win, Mourinho's team draws level with Sporting CP in second place on 52 points, moving within four points of Francesco Farioli's FC Porto at the top.
