Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe says he will assess Anthony Gordon’s fitness “closer to the game” ahead of Saturday’s clash with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Magpies host the Seagulls at St James’ Park seeking to end a run of four straight league defeats.

Gordon, who missed games against Bournemouth and Arsenal, could return, while Joelinton is available again after suspension.

"He did part of a session on Wednesday. It was great to see him back on the pitch. He's a player of huge quality and one that we've missed,” Howe told the media.

"We'll make an assessment on his fitness closer to the game and see what he gets through (Friday).

"We need to keep the level of performance where it was against Arsenal. The team looked good, it looked confident, it defended well. I think it was a big upturn.”
