Jordan Henderson and Emmanuel Emegha are definitely ruled out for the visitors due to injuries, who are also without Wesley Fofana after the centre-back's red card on the final day of the previous campaign.
Danny Welbeck also faces a late fitness assessment ahead of the game and is not expected to make the side as Alonso and his staff monitor his progress.
For Fulham, Tom Cairney (knee) is the only player ruled out of the clash in what is a huge boost for Arbeloa.
