Julian Alvarez is set to leave Atletico Madrid this summer as Arsenal chase his signature.

The Argentinian wants to leave the Spanish capital this summer and Atletico fans made their voices heard over the weekend as the striker was booed before the game, when he brought on and after the clash in what were dramatic scenes.

After the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, Barcelona were said to be interested in Alvarez but reports suggest they have given up their pursuit with just one week before the transfer window slams shut.

However, as Barcelona step aside, Arsenal are prepared to spend more than £100M on the Atlético Madrid forward and reports state a blockbuster return to the Premier League is now possible before the deadline.

The former Manchester City star was instructed by Atlético staff  to head straight down the tunnel afterwards rather than approach the supporters who were still throwing objects at him and jeering as he walked down the tunnel.

“We all need to be united,” Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told DAZN after the game.

“Julian is here, he’s with us in the team and while he’s with us, we’re going to support him and we want him in the best way. Unfortunately, it’s a situation that isn’t comfortable for anyone, but hopefully all that is sorted out and at the end of the season we can all be happy.”

During the World Cup, Alvarez told ESPN that “a transfer is the best option” and that he wanted to “fulfil my dream” of joining a Barcelona, a dream which looks impossible for now.
