Ex-Juventus chief Moggi: ADL wants Sarri at Napoli; Calzona impact overrated

Former Juventus director general Luciano Moggi is convinced Napoli want to re-sign Maurizio Sarri.

Sarri is weighing up his position at Lazio.

And Moggi told Radio Crc: “It was all too clear that (president Aurelio) De Laurentiis was thinking about Sarri. It was the right move to hire (Francesco) Calzona, if he had hired another coach he would have had to sack the third coach in a year.

"Sarri didn't want any manager alongside him, the good (Igli) Tare who always kept the books in order and kept the rankings high, not getting along with Sarri, resigned. (president Cladudio) Lotito wants results and he is right also because they were guaranteed to him and this has influenced Lazio's progress throughout the season and now the flaws have come to light. Sarri's statements demonstrate suffering.

"Calzona didn't fix Napoli. He struggled to draw against Cagliari, he won in Reggio Emilia, but look at the condition Sassuolo is in and then he won against Juventus who however could also have won 4-1 against Napoli.

"This is to say that Napoli has not changed, it is in a somewhat particular system because he would like to do, but he is unable to do what he did last year. The midfield doesn't filter, the defence struggles one-on-one so it's not the Napoli of last year. There is a lack of intensity in midfield, which is why the defence struggles and the opponent's counterattacks are detrimental to the Azzurri.

"It is to be hoped that the victories give self-esteem, but it is wrong to think that Napoli is on the upswing just by looking at the results.

"(Victor) Osimhen isn't in good condition yet, it's true that he scored, but he's not the one who attacks the opposing defense. I don't think he is distracted by the market also because the better he plays the more he earns. It's true that the goal average is in line with last year's, but the goal against Cagliari and the 2 against Sassuolo don't count, I don't think he has the adequate preparation, I saw him badly. Then he is stubborn, he never gives up and always tries and it does him credit, but I don't see him in good shape yet.

"Napoli are not to be underestimated, they are good, they need self-esteem. Lobotka, for example, is a photocopy of last year's so it's about regaining confidence and this can come through victories. The match against Barcelona will tell us whether Napoli will be recovered or not."
