The Tactics Nerd Becomes a Beacon of Hope
Julian Nagelsmann was just 20 years old when he had to give up on his dream of making it as a professional footballer. Several serious knee injuries shattered his hopes—but instead of dwelling on disappointment, he set his sights on a new career path.
Thomas Tuchel, who was coaching Nagelsmann at Augsburg at the time, tasked him with preparing tactical analyses of upcoming opponents. This was Nagelsmann’s first taste of coaching. His exceptional football IQ and remarkable observational skills quickly became apparent, paving the way for his journey into management.
In February 2016, TSG Hoffenheim promoted him from youth coach to first-team manager—making Nagelsmann the youngest Bundesliga head coach ever. The hype was enormous. Despite the intense media spotlight, the then 28-year-old handled the pressure, steering Hoffenheim out of a sporting crisis and into the Champions League.
After his spell at RB Leipzig, he moved to Bayern Munich in 2021. For the first time, he was responsible for managing international superstars. Not every challenge was easy for Nagelsmann to resolve. In January 2023, an interview with Manuel Neuer caused a stir. After Bayern’s goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic was dismissed at Nagelsmann’s request, Neuer told the Süddeutsche Zeitung that it felt like his “heart had been ripped out.”
Media reports increasingly suggested that Nagelsmann had lost the dressing room. Just a few months later, Bayern’s management decided, in a sudden move, to part ways with him. Nagelsmann learned of his dismissal while on a skiing holiday in Austria.
His reputation seemed damaged, but ultimately, the split turned out to be a major opportunity. In autumn 2023, he took over the German national team, tasked with restoring the squad’s confidence ahead of the home European Championship a year later.
Nagelsmann certainly succeeded. He launched successful media campaigns and even convinced Toni Kroos to make a short-term return to the national team. However, the dream of winning the title ended in the quarter-finals, with Germany narrowly losing to eventual champions Spain.
Early on, Nagelsmann stated that he sees Germany as one of the favorites for the 2026 World Cup. The big goal is a fifth World Cup title. While his team hasn’t yet shown the same dominance as some other top nations during the build-up, the now 38-year-old can rely on a strong squad featuring outstanding talents like Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, and Joshua Kimmich.
