Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal has sent a defiant message to Spain supporters after their frustrating 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their 2026 World Cup opener.

Returning from a two-month injury layoff, the teenager came off the bench to inject much-needed creativity into a side that struggled to break down a disciplined opponent in front of 67,640 fans.

Having been carefully managed after an April injury, the coaching staff opted against starting him, easing him back into action.

Despite the dropped points, Yamal remains optimistic about Spain’s chances in the tournament and encouraged supporters to stay positive following the disappointing result.

“It’s our first World Cup match and we’ve picked up a point,” he wrote on social media.

“We know this is a long competition and that our goal is still a long way off, but we’ll keep working hard and everything will turn out just as we hope – have no doubt about that.

“I want to thank God for allowing me to play again after the injury, and also my family for always being by my side, supporting me and accompanying me every step of the way.”
