Reports claim that the Uruguay side had been due to fly from Cancún to Fort Lauderdale early on Sunday afternoon, but paperwork issues relating to the plane led to their initial flight being cancelled.

The problem facing the team was reportedly due to issues with paperwork for the aircraft which meant it had not been approved to take such a route to Miami.

Uruguay captain, José María Giménez described the delays as “difficult” as the team struggled were left stranded at the hotel.

“We had some complications,” the Atlético Madrid defender said. “It was difficult, but we took advantage by resting at the hotel. And we just got here later.”

A Fifa statement read: "Due to an airline permitting error in Mexico, the Uruguay national team’s departure from Cancun to Miami was delayed. The airline has apologised for the inconvenience caused.

“FIFA remained in close contact with the Uruguay national team throughout their delay and worked alongside airport and operational partners to help expedite the process and minimise disruption to the team’s travel arrangements."

Legendary striker Diego Forlán also commented on the issue which could have a serious impact on the national side as they head into their first clash this week.

“Who is to blame???” Forlán wrote, followed by “Arriba Uruguay!!”
