Following their thumping 7-1 World Cup Group E victory over Curacao on Sunday, Germany are being tipped as one of the favourites to go all the way as supporters were stunned by their dominance.
Germany faced Curacao in the biggest mismatch at the World Cup in terms of rankings (72 places) since 2010 when Ivory Coast played North Korea (78 places) but despite this, Nagelsmann’s side looked incredible on the night.
Before the final result, Klopp remarked “luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team” as he was slammed for giving team selection suggestions.
Post match, he laughed off his comments which many people took to suggest that Nagelsmann’s future was in doubt and that Klopp may step in and replace the 38 year old.
“I’ve already found the most hated word of the year: ‘Still’, I could have punched myself in the face for that, but it was already too late and I was on TV. It just slipped out so casually and has absolutely no relevance.”
“There’s one more thing I have to say… we still need to make time for this. We’re also informally part of the team, we’re absolutely on your side. What I’ve realized is: I’ll be 59 the day after tomorrow and I’m still an idiot. We are completely on your side, whatever you do. Nothing was intended to come of it to disrupt the process here.”
Nagelsmann suggested there were no hard feelings by laughing and high-fiving Klopp and former Germany striker Thomas Muller after the event which sent concern to fans before the final whistle.
