Zlatan Ibrahimovic has called out Cristiano Ronaldo's role in the Portugal side in this summer's World Cup.

Portugal are through to the last 16 of the World Cup. Roberto Martinez's side came from behind to beat Croatia 2-1 on Thursday in Toronto in what was a dramatic victory.

Ronaldo, who had scored the equaliser from the penalty spot, left the pitch in the 80th minute and watched from the bench as his side scored a late winner through Goncalo Ramos

The Al-Nassr star is the all-time men's international goalscorer with 146 goals in 232 appearances for Portugal since making his debut in 2003.

However, at 41 years old, he has been criticized for his role in the Portugal side as many feel that he is restricting the side in attack due to his lack of pace and selfish nature.

One pundit who agrees is Ibrahimovic who stated this week that Ronaldo being involved so much is pure hubris.

"Portugal fans could have expected what's happening. You can't expect to win anything in 2026 with a 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo leading the attack. Especially since Ramos is on the bench, having come on and scored.

"This isn't 'legendary leadership.' It's the ego that's holding the team hostage. Ronaldo has lost his touch and mobility.

“Now he's just in the box... At this point, his aura is supporting him more than his legs. Continuing to start him is pure nostalgia-driven madness."

Portugal will now take on their Iberian neighbours Spain in Monday's round-of-16 game in Dallas, Texas where Ronaldo is set to start once more, much to Ibrahimovic’s disappointment.
