Infantino’s now aborted plan to sell shares in a new commercial entity to private investors has led to calls from around the globe for him to step down as FIFA President.
The FIFA chief wanted to create a new commercial vehicle and sell roughly 20% of the rights connected to FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup, to private investors.
UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation have united against Infantino whilst associations of several countries including England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands have now publicly said they have lost confidence in him.
Now, the likes of Robert Pirès, Juan Sebastian Veron, Lucy Bronze and Mikael Silvestre, have released a joint-statement speaking out against Infantino in what is a powerful statement that could be the nail in the coffin.
The statement can be read below as a number of icons state "enough is enough" and "we will be silent no more."
This statement comes just days after Kevin Lamour, a longtime colleague of the FIFA boss, was fired after he revealed he had been deceived" by Infantino's lack of openness.
Lamour's exit came on the same day that Infantino lost the support of the Scottish FA, just the latest association to call for Infantino to step down.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin is calling on European nations to boycott FIFA tournaments and wants Infantino to step down as soon as possible. Čeferin has described the failed proposal as “even worse than the Super League” in a sentiment that many supporters agree with.
The FIFA president remains under huge pressure to resign and the latest statement from so many football icons, who may be joined by others, could be the straw to break the camel's back.
