Chelsea have released a statement condemning alleged racist abuse directed at one of their players during a UEFA Youth League match.

Chelsea have condemned an alleged racist abuse from a Qarabag fan following a UEFA Youth League game in Baku on Wednesday (November 5).

Chelsea’s Under-19s academy side were 5-0 winners against the Azerbaijani side in the as they made it four wins from four.

17-year-old Chelsea forward Sol Gordon opened the scoring in the 57th minute before he and his teammates went to celebrate close to the advertising hoarding.

A number of Qarabag fans then approached to confront the young players, and a report from BBC Sport indicates that eyewitnesses alleged that they saw monkey gestures.

Ukrainian referee Dmytro Kubriak temporarily halted the match for several minutes as players, Chelsea head coach Calum McFarlane, and members of his coaching staff voiced their complaints to the officials.

Chelsea have since released a statement, saying: “We are aware of an incident during today's Uefa Youth League match in Azerbaijan in which, after scoring, a number of our players were subjected to racist abuse from an individual in the crowd.

“Racism and all forms of discriminatory behaviour are completely unacceptable and have no place in football or indeed in society. We strongly condemn the actions of the individual responsible.”
