Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis says it's too soon to consider losing coach Antonio Conte to the Italy post.

Conte has been linked with the Azzurri job after Rino Gattuso's resignation a fortnight ago.

But De Laurentiis told the New York Times: "Conte as the next Italy coach? At the moment, we don't have a president of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), so no one can decide to appoint him.

"First and foremost, this problem within the Federation must be resolved. Conte is a very serious person. He has a contract with me; he'll never abandon me at the last minute because it would create a huge problem for Napoli. This very strong Napoli team is, after all, his creation, so he would be killing his own child by abandoning it at the very last minute.

"Perhaps he'll decide immediately and say he wants to go and coach Italy. In that case, he would have time, between April and May, to find someone else to replace him.

"Otherwise, I don't think Conte will ever leave Napoli. He's a serious and professional man. If I were a coach, I would think twice before accepting the national team job."
