For the Brazilian, Milan's San Siro remains one of the greatest stadiums in football.
Altafini told Il Giornale: "San Siro? It's truly incredible that two historic clubs, recognized worldwide for their international victories, don't have their own stadium.
"This story adds anger to the sadness. For me, San Siro remains the most beautiful stadium in the world to watch a football match. On the pitch, you feel the crowd close by, the roar of the crowd is upon you, but the pitch has always been awful, with the cold goal, to the right of the stands, that area covered in sawdust but underneath was ice.
"We used studded studs. Once, Cesare Maldini suffered a serious calf injury, requiring eighteen stitches after a tackle."
On Napoli's Maradona stadium, Altafini was less effusive: "(Napoli president Aurelio) De Laurentiis is right to call it a half-cesspool.
"It was awful then and it remains that way, the pitch full of holes, the crowd far away."
