Several Italian media outlets have recently reported that Milan are working to retain the veteran for another season. Modric joined Milan last summer on a one-year deal after 13 seasons with Real Madrid.
And now Il Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that Modric's future is uncertain.
Dinamo Zagreb want to re-sign Modric after the World Cup. And key to the deal could be Dinamo president Boban, who was the midfielder's big idol as a child.
Modric has previously said that he supported Milan as a young man because Boban played there. But it is far from certain that Modric will return to Dinamo Zagreb.
Milan want to keep him, but will only activate their 12-month option if the 40 year-old wants to stay. It is also not ruled out that Modric will choose to hang up his boots after the World Cup.
