Former Fiorentina and Roma fullback Alberto di Chiara believes the level of Serie A has dropped.

Di Chiara has questioned the quality of individual players in Serie A for the new season.

Asked if standards have changed, Di Chiara told TMW: "Yes, but in a negative sense. The context is completely different, there are some surprises among the coaches and players. The reality is this, a lot of gambles have been made. There aren't even any top-level defenders anymore.

"A club can't always be under pressure. If you play well, I automatically have to raise your wages. It's right that the 25% wage reduction rule for relegation also comes into force. It goes from one blackmail to another, like in the (Gigio) Donnarumma case. If I don't renew, then I'll leave you in the stands for a year.

"There are clearly wage overvaluations, as demonstrated by (Dusan) Vlahovic, who played a year and a half at a high level and was paid an exorbitant amount. There's a total disproportion.

"I'm making a comparison with the past. Years ago, (Dario) Hubner, who scored a lot of goals in Serie B, was worth €50 million? It's all over the place and off the market. The price is that, and we make a virtue of necessity."
