“It’s a privilege to be a part of this football club, to play in this derby. It means a lot,” said Xhaka afterwards.

“We felt it all week, this week was special. We wanted to give the fans something back from today and we are happy that we took the three points and showed a great game.

“The spirit was amazing.”

The 33-year-old continued: “With my experience, I have played many derbies but this week was so special. You can’t describe it with words.

“Derbies are there to win. The supporters need it as well. It’s painful, every derby you lose but this one was special.

“I am proud of this team and proud of the game we played. It wasn’t the most beautiful game football-wise but the character we brought today was amazing.”
