The England striker has struggled in front of goal so far this season and so was left delighted with his double on Wednesday night.
Watkins said afterwards: “It’s been a difficult run for me and that’s the ups and downs of football.
“You keep going and I got my rewards tonight. It was nice to get my goals tonight.
“Since the manager’s come in, I’ve scored a lot of goals and assists. I’ve always found myself playing regularly in the team, so to go a prolonged period of time without scoring does affect you.
“It has been hard but you have to keep picking yourself up, training every day and working hard. Now I can put that behind me and keep looking forward.”
He added, “To go two goals behind, especially away at a difficult place to come, is always going to be difficult.
“But we showed great character to come from behind and get the three points. It puts us up the table now. It’s a very good win.”
