The Red Devils started the new campaign with a devastating loss to Hull City away from home, with both Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire starting under manager Michael Carrick who relied on the pair in defence.
Maguire, 33, is now in his eighth season with the side and as he approaches the end of his career, the England international will be thinking of what he will pursue once his playing time comes to a close.
Speaking to GOAL in association with LiveFootballTickets, Simpson revealed that he believes Maguire could go into management whilst Shaw steps away from United at 31 years old.
“I don’t think it will be his last season at United. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s our main centre-back again this season. He has never relied on blistering pace, he knows how to defend his box, he’s good on the ball, he’s good in the attacking box, and that’s not going to change overnight.
“He’s a leader, he’s been captain, and even if he isn’t now, he is still a captain around the place. I think Luke Shaw will go, but I think you need to keep Harry for the experience he brings.
“I think he's one where you keep giving him another year and eventually, he may become that bit-part player, but he would take that at 33, 34 years of age. He loves the club and may even stay on to coach when he calls time on his career.”
Maguire made 23 appearances, including 19 starts, scoring 1 goal and providing 2 assists in 1,653 minutes last season as he remained a key figure under Carrick who will be keen to keep hold of him until at least next summer.
There have been little reports of Shaw leaving and with just over a week of the transfer window remaining, he is unlikely to depart.
