Tonali, 25, was handed a ten-month ban from football in October 2023, just a few months after joining Newcastle from AC Milan for a reported fee of £55 million.
According to The Athletic, Tonali approached the club about taking a pay cut during his ban, which the club agreed to.
The report also adds that the midfielder secretly put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension, meaning his new deal now expires in 2029, although there is an option to extend by a further 12 months.
Tonali has been linked with a move back to Italy essentially since he joined Newcastle, but the Premier League club are now in a much better position that initially thought.
