It's now emerged that Rooney has been named in United's U18 matchday squad for their opening game of the season.
Rooney is amongst the substitutes as United face Everton away on Saturday.
Coach Darren Fletcher, a former teammate of Kai's father, Wayne Rooney, has also named 14 year-old JJ Gabriel in today's squad.
Rooney is on the bench, while Gabriel - who is the son of former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill - is in the starting XI.
