Maguire was the hero for United as he scored a late winner against Liverpool at Anfield in a thrilling 2-1 victory which sealed The Reds’ fourth consecutive loss and the Red Devils’ second win on the trot.
The England international has not been the most popular figure over the years and many have been desperate to see him leave in the past due to his inconsistencies and various mistakes.
However, Maguire has had a resurgence and manager Ruben Amorim has put a lot of faith in the veteran defender. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt believes Maguire has been let down in recent years and his failings are down to a lack of investment in defence.
"Do you know what you were saying about never letting the club down, I think it’s the other way around, I think the club has let him down, if I’m honest.
"If you look at his best games they have always been for England, he’s had John Stones next to him, it’s like a Yin and Yang. If you look at all the best partnerships for Man United, Bruce – Pallister, totally different players, Vidic – Ferdinand, totally different players.
"With Harry, he’s going to that club, and he’s never had a player next to him who can compliment him ever..."
The likes of Raphael Varane, Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and many others have not been good enough to match Maguire. Butt may be right in his assessment, and Maguire may never have reached his full potential due to United’s lack of commitment at the back.
