Former Premier League manager Martin O'Neill has torn into Liverpool manager Arne Slot after his loss to Manchester United at the weekend.

Slot criticised United’s style of play after full-time and blamed his side’s loss on manager Ruben Amorim’s low block, which sparked outrage among rival fans who said that his excuses were pathetic and embarrassing.

Liverpool, who have now lost their last three top-flight matches for the first time since February 2021 are in a rut and Slot’s comments do not help his side who are falling at every hurdle at the moment.

O'Neill, who managed 359 Premier League fixtures during his career, spoke on talkSPORT about Slot’s comments, which he says disappointed him greatly.

"What I'm a bit disappointed with, well more than a bit, is that some of the comments that Slot, who has proved himself as an excellent manager, coming out and saying it's very difficult to play against a low block and teams that play long balls.

"It reminds me at times of Arsene Wenger way back when I was against him.

"Every time a team got a result against Arsenal, it was always because they played very defensively and they played a very long ball."

Slot enjoyed a superb debut season at Liverpool last campaign, winning the Premier League with ease after taking over from Jurgen Klopp. However, he now has a lot to solve as he tries to turn his side from consistent losers to title challengers once more.
