Premier League leaders Arsenal were said to be exploring a late deal for the Italian in the final days of the January transfer window, in a move that would have shocked both sets of fans.
Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso rubbished such reports that journalists such as the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope suggested are likely to come back in the summer as Tonali prepares for a move.
Now, speaking to talkSPORT, Magpies CEO David Hopkinson has spoken on the failed move and what Tonali means to the side
"I have no idea. That’s our answer.
"Eddie (Howe) got it right, he doesn’t know, I don’t know. Here’s what I do know, he’s a superstar player, he’s under contract here.
"He’s not the only player we had that other clubs would covet, so I think if we get a situation where people aren’t trying to muck about and sew some chaos into the marketplace in order to dislodge our players, then we’ve got a real problem.
"Sandro has been a wonderful player, a smile’s on every day I see him, I believe he’s happy here and we’re certainly happy with him."
Tonali is contracted until 2029 with an option to extend by a year, meaning any side interested in stealing him away would have to cough up a hefty fee.
The midfielder has made 92 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and providing eight assists under Howe who will not want to let him go anytime soon as the summer approaches.
