United have pulled out of talks for Baleba over Brighton's £120m valuation.
However, United manager Ruben Amorim is still demanding a new midfield addition before the market shuts and Wharton is now under consideration.
Wharton has also attracted interest from Liverpool and Bayer Munich over the past six months. Palace would demand £50-60m for the midfielder and will be under no pressure to sell with Ebere Eze and Marc Guehi set to be sold in the coming days.
